Hedgerows
We have used many permaculture principles on the land to establish a diverse range of habitiats. Hedgerows have been restored, where required, and additional hedges have been planted around the vegetable patch (now very overgrown with weeds).
There are high hedgerows surrounding the field, containing a wide variety of native speices.

Wildlife
It is sancutary for all types of wildlife and each year more native wildflowers return to the site under sensitive grass management.

Because of its triangular shape it is of little use to conventional farming and as a nature haven; we would like to sell to people who are passionate about the environment and wildlife.

Surrounding area
High ham is a village which sits atop a hillside surrounded by the distictive and beautiful Somerset Levels. These are extensive wetlands of rich biodiversity and therefore of national and international importance. From the peice of land you can see across the levels to the iconic Glastonbury tor and the Mendip Hills beyond. A short walk from the field can provide stunning views across the levels toward the bristol channel.

The village of High Ham has a pub, a primary school, playing field and community hall. The closest market town is Langport, which is 4 miles to the south. Heading north, about 8 miles across the levels, will take you to Street and Glastonbury.

Coppice and orchard

We bought the field in 2005 and that winter planted 60 native trees to the north, creating a small coppice woodland. We also planted a small orchard of mixed fruits. There are various types of cooking and eating apples, a plum, greengage, pear and an almond tree. All are providing plentiful amounts of fruit. (We have a record of all the fruit trees names and locations).

Meadow and vegpatch

Most years we have cut the pasture, which looks beautiful and has given us lots of hay. We have also grown an abundance of veggies. The soil is great for growing and provides nutritious food.

The land has been used organically by ourselves for eleven years and for eight years prior to that it was left to grow wild. It is an old orchard and still has one remaining apple tree.

Access
The plot has easy access from a straight road, just inside the 30mph speed limit. The original field entrance was improved with hardcore and gravel, with a 7' wooden gate and 3' pedestrian gate, set back from the road. This provided parking for 2 cars.

Barn
There is an open fronted barn, built from 100% reclaimed materials, which provides the perfect shelter for storing hay, firewood or small plant machinary. In addition, the barn's roof supplies water for the large raintank.
